The annual Great Lakes Park Training (GLPTI) will return to Pokagon State Park near Angola, Indiana February 26-29, 2024. GLPTI, the longest continuously running training academy for park professionals in the nation, features educational sessions, networking opportunities, and social events in a unique and relaxed atmosphere.
For 2024, GLPTI is adding a Playground Maintenance Technician (PMT) training workshop. The PMT course is a 2 day in person training at Pokagon State Park that includes current information and best practices in the field, and is recognized by national leaders in parks, recreation, and land management. This course increases maintenance staff knowledge base and enhances their application and problem-solving skills in playground maintenance. The course focus is on:
- Learn by doing. Hands on learning which combines discussion and virtual environments to understand playground maintenance tasks.
- Learn about materials. Learn how to maintain playground equipment made of metal, plastic, wood and concrete.
- Learn about safety. Understand how to take damaged equipment out of service safely, keep proper records, and identify potential legal issues related to playground maintenance.
- Learn about surfaces. Learn how best to maintain unitary and loose-fill surfaces as well as fasteners and connectors.
The PMT course also gives attendees resources to take back to your office including a 250-page textbook, workbook, and upon completion, a Playground Maintenance Technician Certificate.

GLPTI sessions are presented in 5 tracks- Park and Facilities Maintenance, Personnel and Career Development, Natural Resource Management, Natural and Cultural Interpretation, and Park Operations and will also feature a virtual package of online sessions for those unable to travel. CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are available. GLPTI runs from February 26-29, 2024.
